It is illegal to possess live bait fish.
It is illegal to possess live game fish, unless the fish have been lawfully caught and are in the immediate vicinity of the waters from which they were taken.
Live fish and live fish eggs cannot be placed in any waters except those from which they were taken.
Bait cannot be set out or used to attract fish unless it is attached to a hook used in angling.
Snares, firearms, spring-loaded gaff hooks, or any device used to attract, stun or kill fish by causing an explosion or electrical current in the water must not be used in fishing.
Fish possessed at other than your permanent residence must not be skinned, cut or packed in a manner that prevents the determination of the number of fish possessed, the species of fish possessed, and the length of fish possessed where size limits are applicable.
One line may be used when angling into open water.
Two lines may be used when angling into ice-covered water.
No line used in angling may be equipped with more than three hooks.
Lines used in angling may not be farther than 30 metres from the angler, and must be attended at all times.
The above is only a brief listing of some of the regulations that affect sportfishing in Alberta. Please refer to the current Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations for a complete listing of all regulations.

Alberta Fishing Licences:
All persons sportfishing in Alberta are required to hold a Sportfishing Licence, except youths under 16 years of age, Alberta residents aged 65 and older, and native Indian people. In addition to the Sportfishing License, a special license is also required for Sturgeon Sportfishing. Licences may be purchased at private licence issuers throughout Alberta.
Licence fees are based on where an angler resides. Anglers are classified as either Residents or Non-residents.
A Resident is a person whose primary residence is in Canada, and is either a Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant or has lived in Canada for the immediately preceding 12 months.
A Non-resident is a person who does not reside in Canada.
The following table lists the fees for sportfishing licences in Alberta. Fees are in Canadian dollars and do not include the seven percent (7%) federal Goods and Services Tax (GST). Before purchasing any licence, a person must hold a valid Wildlife Identification Number (WIN). You can apply for your number at the same time you purchase your licence. The WIN costs $8.00 and is valid for five years.
